It took me a while to notice it, too. I was photographing some RX-8s at my local Mazda club meet and I saw that and was immediately like

There’s something like 8 of them hidden on the car.

RX-8 has Doritos hidden all over. They were definitely on a theme.

Now I’m curious - is that a rear fog light in non-American markets?

Yes. Are they not fog lights in American markets?

We almost never get rear fog lights, except mainly on German cars. And then their drivers just leave them on 24/7 because they’re morons who don’t know what that button does.
The only American car to be sold domestically with them was the Oldsmobile Aurora.

Fog lights are a legal requirement in the U.K. if not the whole of Europe.

Even if it means having to cut a bumper up to add one.

I don’t think this is always true. I have a feeling the earlier cars have the rotor badge thing, and the later ones a fog light.

I think it was always a fog light in markets where a fog light was a legal requirement.

Maybe fog lights aren’t a requirement in Australia any more. They sure used to be, you can see it on Aus 300ZX vs the JDM ones. But our early RX8s have a gaping butthole, the later ones have no butthole at all.

I don’t think it’s a legal requirement for JDM cars as that is the most common thing that needs added when grey importing a car from Japan.

Like the Integra they either mounted it low under the rear bumper or cut into the rear bumper.

Kinja'd!!!

I think Honda started mounting them in the bumper before others used the Japanese sourced part on other cars.

I’ve just seen a picture of an Integra in Toronto as ‘UKDM’, with British style plates and rear fog light. Very strange.

Thing is, it’s a LHD with the fog light on the right. The fog light is supposed to be on the side of the driver. Odd.

Here they were never a requirement for compliance. So the Aus have them and the JDM don’t. Very strange.

Interestingly the 300ZX has symmetrical fittings, 1 on each side but the one on the passenger side is a reflector only.

It’s all very strange

It’s like a guy I know who has a BMW E46 M3. On the boot lid is a fog light, the other is a faux light. Like it would cost a lot to make both fog lights, especially as BMW would have to make the other side a fog light for it to comply with drivers side fog light requirements.

I believe the requirements for Britain and Europe is that there are a reflector on both sides of the rear.

Jesus. It would be so much easier for everyone if there was 1 set of rules.

It’s crazy.

We have two fundamental car rules. One is a rear fog light and the other is the separation of the tail light and indicator from what some U.S. cars.

I saw a video and it had a Ford Transit in America turning and rather than flashing it’s indicator and showing it’s brake lights it lit the brake lights and the side it was turning to had the brake light flashing (same with the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia and the Buick Regal). Why? Crazy.
